Star Trek (2009, J.J. Abrams)

The USS Enterprise crew members fight together to stop the Romulan Nero from destroying the Federation.
Stardate 2233.04: the USS Kelvin faces a dangerous romulan ship. The Romulan Captain Nero (Eric Bana) travels in time to find Ambassador Spock and asks Captain Robau to leave the ship to negociate a cease fire, leaving George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) in charge. As Nero finds out he landed on the wrong stardate, he kills Robau. Therefore, Kirk sacrifices himself to save the lives of everyone in the ship including his baby son’s, James Tiberius Kirk’s.

The Space/Time travel notion

Nero’s travelling in time constitutes a major plot device because by doing so, he created a new chain of events. That was how Star Trek (2009) brought changes to the storyline (I saw some of the films) but kept the plot elements from the originals. Nero puts the blame on Spock for the destruction of Romulus wants to avenge it but in the past. In the process, he killed Kirk’s dad. Later, when old Spock (Leonard Nimoy) meet ‘Jim’ (Chris Pine), he tells him that ‘in the other life’, his dad lives, he is Captain and above all, they are very close to each other all along.

The Kirk/Spock relationship

In Star Trek (2009), the main characters are (very) young and they don’t know one another yet. Kirk is depicted as a rebellious child before being spotted in a bar and recruited by Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to join Starfleet Academy. There, he meets ‘Bones’ (Karl Urban) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) among others. In the Vulcan Planet, a young boy named Spock deals with his emotion issues considered as a disadvantage. Whereas he is accepted to study at the Vulcan Science Academy, Spock (Zac Quinto) takes the decision to enter Starfleet.
Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy)
The first encounter between Commander Spock and Cadet Kirk after the Kobaysahi Maru issue was memorable. The Kobayashi maru test, first appeared in The Wrath of Khan, is an unwinnable command scenario but Kirk cheated by reprogramming the simulator and succeeded. We have here two strong individuals who do not share the same view on many issues and even fight against each other.
There is a lot to say but I prefer stop here due to my lack of knowledge on the subject,. All I can say is I enjoyed it and hope the sequel is gonna be as good as this.
Memorable quotes
Kirk to Old Spock: Coming back in time, changing history is cheating (refering to the Kobayashi Maru test)
Old Spock: A trick I learned from an old friend…Live long and prosper.
